NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s Cyber Monday and holiday shopping sales are expected to be bigger than ever this year. Many retailers started their online sales last week and on Friday alone consumers spent a record $3.34 billion!

Friday’s online sales were up 11-percent from last year and this year is the first time online shopping exceeded $3 billion in sales.

Today the online shopping frenzy continues — with a new round of digital discounts scheduled for the remainder of the day.

And you can bet Amazon employees are some of the hardest working people in the world today – including thousands at the Amazon distribution center in Haslet. The Amazon fulfillment center there is the size of 28 football fields.

“Amazon robotics are actually bringing shelves of products over to our Amazon associates… and then they’re putting the items into these yellow totes that are moving through the miles of conveyors all throughout the Amazon fulfillment center, over to get packed and shipped out to customers,” explained Amazon spokesperson Amanda Ip.

Last year Amazon processed some 628 orders per second, worldwide. This year is already moving at a record breaking pace.

Ip said Amazon is ready for whatever consumers throw at them and it’s all hands on deck for employees. “We’ve got about 3,000 associates that work here full-time, permanent here in Haslet,” she said. “Nationwide we created more than 120,000 seasonal positions… and thousands of them are right here in Texas.”

Sales from this Cyber Monday could hit at least $3.3 billion. That’s nine-percent more than 2015, and a nearly 27 percent jump from 2014 when sales were at $2.6 billion. Overall, this year’s holiday season could ring up at $117 billion.

“Of the three main shopping days over this holiday weekend, that’s Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Cyber Monday has been growing the fastest of all three of those,” said consumers research president Joe Colangelo.

Every year there’s something new that everyone ‘has to have’ and as usual the hottest items on wish lists are toys and electronics. Companies are also adapting with more people choosing to shop online or with their mobile devices.

“Mobile shopping is huge… but there’s also voice shopping,” Ip said. “You can do voice shopping on your Amazon Echo device. You can ask Alexa ‘what are the deals today?’ and there’s hundreds of exclusive deals available for those voice shoppers.”
